*** TIPS FROM CURRENT SCHOLARS ***

Who is eligible to apply? And, if so, when should I apply?
Students who will be graduating in December or May of the following academic year are eligible to apply.

And, if so, when should I apply?
The application is available November 15 with a deadline of January 21.

Can I view the application?
Application instructions can be viewed at http://remembranceapp.syr.edu/.

What are the requirements to apply?
Applicants are judged on 3 criteria - academic achievement, community service, and their responses to three essay questions.

Do I need to submit references?
Yes, 2 letters of reference are required. One letter must be from a faculty member who has taught, advised, mentored, or supervised you. The second letter can be from an individual who knows you in a professional capacity (employer or supervisor) or can be from another academic.

You should chose recommenders who know you well and who can comment thoughtfully on your abilities or personal attributes. It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide their recommenders with any materials that would be helpful to them in writing the recommendation. Transcripts, writing samples, and draft application essays are common resources that recommenders find helpful.

Requests for recommendations should be made early in the application process to ensure that the recommender has enough time to respond.

Should I list my community service from high school or at a previous college (transfer student), or does only my community service as an SU student count?
Greater emphasis is placed on your current activities, but it is important to establish your overall commitment to community service.

When do I submit my Remembrance Application?
Applications are due, via the on-line application site, on January 21. You must submit your completed application and request your letters of recommendation by the deadline. However, your recommenders will have until January 28 to complete their materials.

I've submitted my application. What happens next??
The Remembrance Scholar Selection Teams review all applications during the month of February.  Between the end of February and prior to Spring Break, applicants are notified whether or not they have been selected for an interview.  Interviews are scheduled for early April, and students selected to be Remembrance Scholars are notified by April 30th.  Students studying abroad are interviewed in a telephone conference call.

Who chooses the Remembrance Scholars?
A committee consisting of 12 SU faculty and staff and 12 former Remembrance Scholars make the selections.

If I am selected for an interview, will I receive an interview confirmation?
Yes, all students selected for an interview will receive directions on how to schedule an interview on-line. They will receive an e-mail confirmation that will be sent 3-7 days after the interview has been scheduled.

What if I need to change my interview time?
You can change your interview time until site is closed, approximately one week prior to the start of the interview period.

What if I forget the location of my interview?
You can check your confirmation e-mail or contact the Office of Undergraduate Studies at 443-1368 between the hours of 8:30 and 5:00pm.

What should I wear to the interview?
Business casual attire should be worn.

Who will be at the interview?
The Remembrance Scholarship committee is comprised of 24 faculty, staff and current remembrance scholars. Two faculty/staff members and two Remembrance Scholars will conduct each interview.

What type of questions will be asked at the interview?
No two interviews are exactly alike. However, you'll likely be asked questions about current events - local, national and international. It is also likely that you'll be asked questions about your SU experiences and any information that you included in your application. The interview is an opportunity to expand on what you've written, not simply repeat what the committee has read about you.

When are applicants notified that they have been chosen as Remembrance Scholars?
All applicants who have been interviewed are notified by May 1st.
