2002 Remembrance Week Schedule of Events
November 1st – November 10th
- The Rose Laying Ceremony at the Wall of Remembrance – Each of the 35 Remembrance Scholars placed a rose in memory and honor of those lost on Pan Am 103. Our two Lockerbie Scholars and one of the Remembrance Scholars spoke.
- Carnations and Lapel Ribbons – During the week of November 4th – 8th, the scholars distributed dark blue lapel ribbons to the campus community in memory of the victims. They also gave out over 300 white carnations with a small card listing the name of a victim of Pan Am 103. The recipients placed many of those carnations on the Wall of Remembrance.
- Art and Archive Exhibit – This exhibit included original art and literary work from victims, responses from friends and family, photography, new work created by current students, and the Remembrance Quilt. The exhibit was in the Panaschi Lounge of the Schine Student Center from November 1st – 10th, which overlapped with Parents Weekend. The Schine was Parents Weekend “headquarters,” so many of the 5,600 parents and families who visited campus were able to view this exhibit.
- A Panel Discussion titled Terrorism in the Media – SU faculty, and reporters Matt Mulcahy and Sean Kirst, who have both visited Lockerbie, were panelists. A second panel discussion is being planned for the spring semester.
- Three Service Projects – Remembrance Scholars and their friends volunteered at the Syracuse Rescue Mission’s Soup Kitchen, at Syracuse Stage (Drama Department), and at the International Day Care Center.
- Discussion Groups in the Residence Halls and Classes – A group of the scholars gave a short presentation, followed by a question and answer discussion, in each of the large residence halls about Pan Am 103 and the effects of terrorism. All of the scholars did the same in many of their classes.
Remembrance Week 2002 consisted of a weeklong series of events honoring the lives of 35 Syracuse University students who lost their lives in the Pan Am Flight 103 terrorist attack over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. Each year, 35 Remembrance Scholarships, each in the amount of $5,000, are awarded to undergraduate students because of distinguished academic achievement, citizenship, and service to community. The 2002-2003 Remembrance Scholars hosted all events.
